My Patient Rights Featured in TIME Magazine

Liz Helms, President and CEO of the California Chronic Care Coalition was recently featured in TIME Magazine! Angela Haupt, Health & Wellness Editor, interviewed Helms for her story 6 Things to Do if Your Doctor Isn’t Listening to You.

Helms shared her story as a patient navigating the health care system when she needed to treat Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMJ/TMD). She explains that it’s important to be assertive when you find yourself in a situation where you believe your doctor isn’t listening to you. Do not hesitate to ask for what you want or need. Read the article for the recommended 6 steps to a good working relationship with your doctor. Ultimately, you are your own best advocate.

Not every problem begins and ends at the doctor’s office. When you and your doctor successfully come up with a treatment plan, other obstacles may get in the way – like the doctor’s medical group and your insurer. If you need to overturn a denial or file an appeal, your doctor can be a fantastic advocate and provide support letters and other documents to ensure you get the treatment you need. In the meantime, visit MyPatientRights.org for more on your rights and to start filing complaints, grievances, or appeals. If you need help with those complaints, send us a note.
