(Sacramento, CA) – Today, the Alliance for Fertility Preservation (AFP) released the following statement on Senate Bill 600 (Portantino):
“In sending SB 600 to Governor Newsom, the Legislature made the right decision on behalf of thousands of Californians at risk of losing their fertility due to side-effects associated with the treatment of cancer and other serious illnesses. By signing the bill, California will take a stand against inappropriate – and pervasive – denials of fertility preservation,” said Joyce Reinecke, AFP Executive Director. “The California Department of Managed Health Care has made clear that health plans must cover fertility preservation as a basic health care service, and amendments to the bill further clarify that the coverage already exists under the Knox-Keene Act, virtually eliminating state costs. According to the California Health Benefits Review Program, minimal costs would be in premium increases of .0043% in DMHC- and CDI-regulated plans. By clarifying this coverage, this bill will spare the newly diagnosed cancer patients we serve from having to fight to protect their fertility and will instead allow them to focus on fighting their cancer.”
